49ers' Marquise Goodwin suffers concussion, taken to hospital for precautionary reasons

LOS ANGELES — San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Marquise Goodwin was taken off the field on a cart after taking a big hit from Rams defensive back Blake Countess in the closing moments of the first half of Sunday’s game.

He is being taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons, the team announced.

With about a minute and a half left in the second quarter, Niners quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo fired a pass over the middle intended for Goodwin but as Goodwin went for the ball, Countess came in and delivered a hit to Goodwin’s head that immediately drew multiple flags for hitting a defenseless receiver.

Goodwin remained down on the field as medical personnel rushed to his side. After a few minutes, Goodwin was able to sit up on his own but 49ers trainers kept a hand on the back of his neck to keep it stabilized.

Soon after, a cart came out and Goodwin was able to get on it with the help of the training staff. Safety Adrian Colbert, who grew up in the same Texas town as Goodwin and calls him a cousin, stood close by and held his hand as he was taken to the locker room.

As the cart headed to the tunnel, Goodwin raised his arms multiple times, pounded his chest and waved to the crowd as he received an ovation from the fans.

Before the end of the half, Goodwin was diagnosed with a concussion and a return to the game was ruled out. Goodwin has a history of concussions, including one in the Oct. 1 game against the Arizona Cardinals. Countess was also being evaluated for a concussion at the end of the half.

Goodwin’s injury brought to an end a season filled with adversity. Earlier this year, Goodwin and his wife’s son died because of pregnancy complications. Five weeks later, Goodwin’s biological father passed away before a game against the Tennessee Titans. He played in games both weeks and put up big performances each time.

“I’ve been dealing with a lot,” Goodwin said after the Tennessee game. “I’m blessed. I’m thankful for the opportunity. God has shown me so much in this season. I had a lot going on this year losing my baby, and I just recently lost my biological father this week. It’s just been a lot, but I really didn’t let the outside negative energy affect how I play, how I approach this game or how I come to work each day. I just kind of stayed positive and kept my mind fresh, and I relied on God to bring me through all of the situations that I’ve been through.”

On Sunday, Goodwin had two catches for 28 yards and a touchdown before suffering the concussion. He ends a breakout 2017 season with a career-high in catches (56) and receiving yards (962) to go with two scores.
