After racking up 28 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists in a 129-107 road win over the Phoenix Suns, James said, per ESPN.com’s Dave McMenamin, “You can just say I’m like fine wine, I get better with age. That’s what it says.”
The 33-year-old James is enjoying one of his best statistical season in recent memory and is a leading MVP candidate.
When asked if an increase in possessions has led to his statistical success this season, LeBron bristled, “More possessions, my ass. What are you talking about? I’m getting better with age, that’s what it’s saying.”
James’ 26.9 points per game this season is his highest mark since averaging 27.1 in 2013-14. His 9.0 assists per game are his most ever, and his 8.5 rebounds per game are a shade below his career high of 8.6 set last season.
This season is by far the closest James has ever come to averaging a triple-double on a per-game basis in a single campaign.
With regard to Tuesday’s performance, LeBron talked about focusing on excelling in all areas:
“I think I was just playing in all three facets and more. I was able to get a charge as well, pick up a couple blocks, couple steals. It’s just being around the court and being reliable to my teammates. For me to be able to clean glass and get my guys good looks where they were able to just catch-and-shoot or catch and lay it up, it made it a lot easier for me for sure. With the scoring, I just tried to be aggressive and got to the free-throw line tonight and was able to knock those down, too.”
Perhaps more importantly for James, his performance helped the Cavs snap a two-game losing streak after a pair of road losses to the Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers.
Since a four-game winning streak that began just before Cleveland’s trade-deadline purge, consistency has been hard to come by for the team as a whole.
LeBron’s numbers suggest he isn’t to blame for that, but the Cavs will likely need more performances like Tuesday’s out of him if they are going to improve on their fourth-place standing in the Eastern Conference.
