When it comes to existing and emerging beauty trends (or just a satisfying midday distraction) there’s no better place to look to than the ever-reliable Pinterest. Rife with inspiration that runs the gamut from haircuts and makeup to need-to-know hacks and DIY ideas, the aesthetically pleasing platform is always on point. And makes for an excellent AF vision board to boot.
What else is notably cool about Pinterest, too, is its able to manually track what’s being pinned and when, which allows them to see what people are currently coveting and most interested in at the moment, giving them real-time insight into what trends are thriving right now, as well as the ability to predict what we can expect to take off in the future.
Luckily, the brand isn’t opposed to sharing its wealth of knowledge, and even better, compiled an exclusive list called the “Pinterest 100,” which is broken down by category and details what’s been particularly popular with Pinners as of late, based on its global data. Even better: It predicts the top trends to try in 2018, so if you’ve been wondering what new haircut or skin-care product to try in the new year, look no further.
Naturally, we’re a bit biased and went straight to the beauty news, and what we learned is equal parts unexpected and intriguing. But first, did you know that Pinterest has a colossal 48 million beauty Pinners? Neither did we. And, according to the brand’s press release, it sees a 75 percent increase in beauty-related Pins years after year. So, without further ado, let’s get into it: These are the most popular searches on Pinterest for the upcoming year — straight from the source itself.
All about lashes:
Data shows that searches for “lashes” are up a profound 152 percent, meaning people might be putting the big brow trend on the back burner in favor of lush, look-at-me lashes. Luckily, with the seemingly never-ending list of killer mascaras out there — not to mention the ones we’re sure to see roll out in the New Year — it’s easier than ever to get a dramatic set.
Oil, come through:
Saves (a.k.a. repins) for “cleansing oil” are up a whopping 555 percent (!) which, TBH, is one of the less surprising reveals on the list, as we’ve seen a major spike in interest surrounding the silky, makeup-dissolving powerhouse in the last few years. Countless brands have come out with their own versions, and something tells me we can only expect to see more in the coming year. (Fingers crossed.)
Base for everyone:
Perhaps we have Rihanna to thank for this one, but saves for “complexion matching” are currently up 378 percent, with people clearly on the hunt for shade-inclusive foundations and concealers. Fenty Beauty (which has truly set the standard and spurred conversation around the topic) and Make Up For Ever are both two solid places to start. Hopefully, we continue to see more and more brands following suit.
Hold the phone, folks: The ubiquitous lob and bob, which have undoubtedly proved pervasive over the last few years, might just be left in 2017. (Keywords being “might be.”) Regardless, saves for “long hair” and “pixie” are both up 130 percent, so we could be seeing a whole lot more cute crops and Cher hair next year.
You heard it here: Nail art is in right now. (I know, who would’ve guessed?) But data doesn’t lie. From negative space manis and geometric masterpieces, it seems people are getting inspired by designed digits, and I for one, don’t hate it.
Forget neutral tones, (sorry, Naked Palettes) but it appears folks are feeling high-voltage hues at the moment. Another surprise, IMHO. But lo and behold, searches for “bright eyeshadow” are up 63 percent and correct me if I’m wrong, but I’d say the startling number of chromatic palettes that launched this year had something to do with it.
Dermarollers, ice rollers, jade and quartz — name a roller, people want it. Saves for “derma roller,” for instance, are up a rather staggering 345 percent, which proves the craze with the skin-boosting tools hasn’t ended.
Forget toting around your entire makeup bag; people want their products all in one place, says Pinterest’s findings.) Saves for “makeup kit” are up 147 percent, showing that folks are valuing time and ease above all else when it comes to beauty. If the aforementioned describes you, might I suggest checking out Gigi Hadid’s Jetsetter Palette?
Liquid lipsticks were all the rage this year, but they could be taking a backseat, making way for their more laid-back cousin: lip tints. Saves are up 414 percent, so let’s hope to see even more innovative likes of the product launch this year.
Slicked-back styles and wavy hair are both booming right now, up a noteworthy 166 percent. In other words, prepare to see a slew of Beyoncé-inspired wet-hair looks and head-turning curls in 2018. (I ain’t sorry.)
